All My Heroes Are Going to Ground...

                  Mike Douglas
August 11, 1925 – August 11, 2006
I remember watching the Mike Douglas Show as a teenager. It was always a lot of fun to watch; comedy, music, infectious laughter. What was truly unique about his show was his 'guest-host' arrangement. Typically, whoever the guest host was on Monday, stayed with the show through Friday; which meant if a musician was guest host on monday, you got to hear this musician perform all week long, as well join in on all the talk, though this wasn't always the case with musicians-- they being a fickle breed, and all --but you also got to hear Mike perform. Yes, he was an accomplished singer himself.

One week of shows I most remember was the week Neil Sedaka guest hosted; he was making a comeback. Sedaka had written a number of songs for the 'up and coming' duo The Captain and Tennille, and was promoting a new album of his own. I can't be sure but I think the album was Laughter in the Rain, (1974).

Mike had a great variety of guests like Malcolm X, Joan Crawford, Brooke Shields, Princess Caroline of Monaco... and musical groups like America, Smokey Robinson & the Miracles, the Stones, and Frank Zappa.

What a great guy Mike was!

Mike Douglas was 81 years old. He died on his birthday.

I remember best the week of John Lennon and Yoko Ono. It was an enjoyable week. And it was a surprisingly good week of guests and talk. Lennon was a very good choice!

Mike Douglas had a lot of good years, but he reached a point on that show where it was all about him, and I finally turned him off.
