A Thinking Man's Meme...
..::The 'Neil Young Tangents' Meme::..
I've decided to create and infect the blogosphere with another pointless meme... A Neil Young meme.
Begin with a Neil Young song. Using a word from the title of the song you choose, find another song who's content contains the same word... in relevance, then find a third song performed by a group who's name contains the same word, and who's lyrics reflect the spirit of the previous two songs.... Example:
"Ohio"
--Neil Young
Tin soldiers and Nixon coming,
We're finally on our own.
This summer I hear the drumming,
Four dead in Ohio.
Gotta get down to it
Soldiers are cutting us down
Should have been done long ago.
What if you knew her
And found her dead on the ground
How can you run when you know?
Gotta get down to it
Soldiers are cutting us down
Should have been done long ago.
What if you knew her
And found her dead on the ground
How can you run when you know?
Tin soldiers and Nixon coming,
We're finally on our own.
This summer I hear the drumming,
Four dead in Ohio.
"My City Was Gone"
--Chrissy Hynde, and the Pretenders
I went back to Ohio
But my city was gone
There was no train station
There was no downtown
South Howard had disappeared
All my favorite places
My city had been pulled down
Reduced to parking spaces
A, O, way to go Ohio
Well I went back to Ohio
But my family was gone
I stood on the back porch
There was nobody home
I was stunned and amazed
My childhood memories
Slowly swirled past
Like the wind through the trees
A, O, way to go Ohio
I went back to Ohio
But my pretty countryside
Had been paved down the middle
By a government that had no pride
The farms of Ohio
Had been replaced by shopping malls
And Muzak filled the air
From Seneca to Cuyahoga Falls
Said, A, O, way to go Ohio
"Old Dominion"
--Eddie From Ohio
You think you'll find some mountains in western Colorado
Fifty weeks of snowy peaks is where you're gonna be
But babe the Rocky Mountains are gradually eroding
The hills of Coors are nothing more than Blue Ridge wannabes
A turkey on its belly, a chicken on its back
Anyway you look at it you'll find her on the map
She revels in the seasons, shakes hands with the north
Hugs the land of Dixie while dancing on the porch
You think autumns in New England are the greatest of them all
But give me sweet Virginia for the fireworks of Fall
The prettiest October, in all the 50 states
Just drive up to the skyline, park the car and wait
So grow up Colorado
Excuse me, Tennessee
If you don't mind, North Caroline
Here's where I want to be
When you're talking home, you mean the Old Dominion
Just southeast of Heaven to the surf and the hills
She's the best of 13 sisters and 37 more
Sweet, sweet Virginia always keeps an open door
They're fiddlin' down in Galax, pickin' up in Floyd
And in the land of Patsy Cline, there're songs you can't avoid
When you're walkin' after midnight, I'll fall to pieces, too
I'm crazy back in baby's arms with sweet dreams of you
So grow up Colorado
Excuse me, Tennessee
If you don't mind, North Caroline
Here's where I want to be
When you're talking home, you mean the Old Dominion
Just southeast of Heaven to the surf and the hills
She's the best of 13 sisters and 37 more
Sweet, sweet Virginia always keeps an open door
They're sailin' down in Norfolk, and skiing up in Bryce
Climbin' up the Devils Stairs against Ranger's advice
They're harvesting in Loudoun to Shenandoah winds
And in the land near Washington, they're rootin' for the Skins
(Fight for Old DC)
Pack up your Impala, and make your move out west
Past the Blue Ridge Mountains, you'll find you passed the best
And when your dreams have ended where mountains are concerned
Me and Sweet Virginia will await for your return
Sweet, sweet Virginia always keeps an open door
Sweet, sweet Virginia always keeps an open door
Sweet, sweet Virginia always keeps an open door

For those of you who've never heard of 'Eddie From Ohio'.... Marvelous melodies and music, reminiscent of Nanci Griffith...
Remember:
1. Neil Young Song Title
2. Song lyrics from a different musician or group that prominently contains a word from your Neil Young Song Title
3. A song from a group who's band name contains the same word from your Neil Young Song Title, and whose lyrics are in spirit with the previous two songs.
I'm not tagging anyone. Just pick up the ball and run with it if you see fit, and tag as many or a few as you wish... make sure you tighten the chin-straps on your thinking caps.

You dog! The first two came eaily. Finding the last one took an hour. And, I confess I've never heard of the artist or the song -- but it fits! Ha!
"When God Made Me"
Was he thinkin' about my country
Or the color of my skin?
Was he thinkin' 'bout my religion
And the way I worshipped him?
Did he create just me in his image
Or every living thing?
When God made me
When God made me
Was he planning only for believers
Or for those who just have faith?
Did he envision all the wars
That were fought in his name?
Did he say there was only one way
To be close to him?
When God made me
When God made me
Did he give me the gift of love
To say who I could choose?
When God made me
When God made me
When God made me
When God made me
Did he give me the gift of voice
So some could silence me?
Did he give me the gift of vision
Not knowing what I might see?
Did he give me the gift of compassion
To help my fellow man?
When God made me
When God made me
When God made me
When God made me

“What if God Was One of Us”
If God had a name what would it be?
And would you call it to his face?
If you were faced with him
In all his glory
What would you ask if you had just one question?
*And yeah, yeah, God is great
Yeah, yeah, God is good
Yeah, yeah, yeah-yeah-yeah
What if God was one of us?
Just a slob like one of us
Just a stranger on the bus
Trying to make his way home
If God had a face what would it look like?
And would you want to see
If seeing meant that
you would have to believe
in things like heaven and in Jesus and the saints
and all the prophets (*)
Trying to make his way home
Back up to heaven all alone
Nobody calling on the phone
'cept for the Pope maybe in Rome(*)
Just trying to make his way home
Like a holy rolling stone
Back up to heaven all alone
Just trying to make his way home
Nobody calling on the phone
'cept for the Pope maybe in Rome

“The Road”
The road that I'm taking
Where it's leading me to, where it's taking me
Or where the final destination is
I have no idea, no clue, no answer
Yet I'm still following this path today
Has destiny already been determined for everyone
Or is it that we have to make our own destiny
Nothing's clear so far
Yet I'm still taking another step towards the road
[Chorus]
Why am I standing on this road
Is this path really destined for me
Would my dreams come true at the end of this road
What really gives me pleasure, money, honor
Or the people I love
I'm longing for the answer
Yet I still can't find one
Wanna say with confidence that this path is the right direction I'm heading
I do not want to look back, I want no regret
Just keep walking towards the end
Yet I still don't feel confident in my decision
[Chorus]
Why am I standing on this road
Is this path really destined for me
Would my dreams come true at the end of this road.
What am I really dreaming for
Who is this searching really for
Will I be able to finally smile when I reach the goal
(Oh) Where am I heading right now
And what is the reason for me to live
Good Job, ER!
I had trouble too. Not because I didn't have a band name with Ohio on my music shelf, but finding a song!
What a hoot.
Bloggers *hate* real homework, ya know.
