I've only been on the ocean once. It was on a 16' catamaran piloted by a friend and I had a blast! The swells weren't as high as what you've described, but in the valley of one I could turn about and see nothing but sea. It was weird, intimidating and exciting and I wished I lived there in Florida to be able to do it more often.
I've always enjoyed movies like "Captain Blood" that showed life aboard a tall ship. It seemed both a miserable and adventurous existence. But even modern vessels hold a fascination for me. I should have joined the Navy. For a great tale of the sea, I recommend "The Bounty-The True Story of the Mutiny on the Bounty" by Caroline Alexander.
Drlobojo and I both implore ye: Get thee to the sea.
And I implore you: Learn to swim. Put it on your list of things to do before laying your burdens down.
I went deep sea fishing in the Pacific off the coast of Mexico once. I caught an 8 1/2 foot long sailfish. I've also swam in the Pacific on the California coast during "red tide". (yuck)
I swam in the Carribean in St Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands, and the Gulf of Mexico at Padre Island, too.
The weather was perfect in St. Thomas, but in Padre Island, I was there one week before Hurricane Hugo hit, and it was rainy and windy the whole week I was there.
If it doesn't quit raining here soon, I may wish I'd learned to swim. I think it's NOT raised one day in the past 54.
