Gadhafi: Islam taking over Europe

Notes progress, sees 'victory' within a few decades

Islam will take over Europe without violent force within a few decades, said Libyan Leader Moammar Gadhafi in a speech aired on the Arab satellite network Al Jazeera.

"We have 50 million Muslims in Europe," Gadhafi said. "There are signs that Allah will grant Islam victory in Europe – without swords, without guns, without conquests. The 50 million Muslims of Europe will turn it into a Muslim continent within a few decades."

If Turkey is added to the European Union, the Libyan leader said, Europe will have another 50 million Muslims.

Albania, a Muslim-majority country, and Bosnia, which is half Muslim, also appear to be on their way to EU membership.

"Europe is in a predicament, and so is America," Gadhafi said. "They should agree to become Islamic in the course of time, or else declare war on the Muslims."

PERSONAL NOTE: In regards to that last statement... It is, for all intents and purposes, an ultimatum-- Surrender or Die; No room for compromise, or negotiation... No middle ground. Well, if I have a vote that counts, I say, "Let it be war." But then, it will never come to that. Islam will never rule the world.

"...the Bent Backed Tulips..."

Nothing derogatory, I assure you. I'm just a huge fan of a certain group of musicians

I love The Beatles, too. I used to know the words to about every song. The first album I owned was the White Album. Apparently did *not* know all the words to "Glass Onion," though!

50-Million! Whoo Doggee, that sure is a lot of people. Too bad it isn't enough. in 2003 the population of Europe was estimated at almost 800-Million. I think muslims have a long way to go before being a democratic majority in Europe. And of course, your post assumes that all muslims would universally desire clerical/sharia law. I imagine that any elected Muslim government would face the democratic struggles that America faces between democrats and republicans. Try not to let the scare-mongers on the religious/republican right keep you awake at night.

Bent.
Did you pay attention to world events in the past six-months or so? Remember the riots in France--burned vehicles and all? Remember the response to the muhommed cartoons?

You are living in a dream-world if you truly see no threat from islam in Europe or the US for that matter.

I have met Brits--reasonable people--who believe their country will soon be embroiled in civil conflict because of the islamic immigrant situation in their country.

DD. I remember the news. I work in the same TV station as EL. What I took from those news pieces, is that allowing a segment of the country to be discrimated against, ostracized and marginalized, is a bad thing.

In France and Britian, Muslims were ostracized to barrios where radicals were able to shout about high muslim unemployment and social discrimination. These were places where learning the english language was discouraged, where theological institutions were ceded much of power that should have been retained by the governmental authorities. This is the wrong way to incorporate a new culture into a country. I'm beginning to see these same things happening in the US and that scares me.

I went to school with a lovely young woman from Pakistan. Her father was a doctor in the community, and had practiced for more than 20 years. After 9/11 his practice dried up. This past year he and his wife moved to Atlanta with one of his daughters.

"...allowing a segment of the country to be discrimated against, ostracized and marginalized, is a bad thing."

Agreed, but that is not happening here to the extent that it is happening in Europe and other places.

"Barrios" is a Spanish term... I know it's nit-picky, but "Slum" would be a more appropriate choice. Barrio simply means "neighborhood."

"This is the wrong way to incorporate a new culture into a country."

Equally wrong is to allow a minority to dictate to the majority what is and is not tolerable-- in respect to cartoons, for instance, not issues of human rights. Especially here in America where freedom of speech is "supposedly" a cherished right of the people.

Violence is an inexcusable response to free and open speech deemed offensive by the violent. Excuses are unexceptable. James Byrd's killers were sentenced to die for killing a black man. Hating black folk was no excuse. Likewise, hating Anglo's because they worship a different god is no excuse for civil unrest, vandalism... or murder.

I remember one story we aired on the Pakistani doctor in Holmes county, Florida. There was no excuse for the treatment he and his family got either.

In regard to your previous comment about Muslim population percentages in Europe... I believe your comment was, "50-Million! Whoo Doggee..." Let's not forget that birthrates among non-Muslims in Europe is in decline, and have been for a decade or more. Gadhafi's prediction was for "a few decades." A lot can happen in a few decades.

But let's also not forget that Muslims have little tolerance for any faith other than their own. Just try being a practicing Christian in a Muslim country. You may not get yourself killed, but you'll certainly be spat upon and despised. It's naive to think Muslims in America or Europe don't feel the same way, despite the freedoms accorded them by the rights of citizenship.

Admittedly, I don't remember a whole lot from my time in Libya as a child, but I remember the stories my parents told. I remember how neat the place was, especially the ruins of Leptis Magnus. But I was a kid, and Roman ruins in 1963 were the modern day equivalent of Disney World. My parents remember a far different Libya. You couldn't pay me to live there, or any Muslim nation, now.
